It worked! The screw backed out just as he said it would, so I backed it out 2 1/2 turns, took it for a 30 minute ride, and readjusted the idle. Now there are only a few very minimal backfires and it is running good. Just to prevent the screw from moving from vibration, I smeared a second coat of JB weld around the head. It ain't pretty, but at this point, all I care about is that I have a running bike.
